The Jaeger March
(MP3, 488 kB)
In Finland immediately after the Civil War, 2,000 volunteers were afforded the right to use the word Jäger in their military ranks. Many of the Jägers continued their military careers. In the 1920s a long feud between officers with Jäger-background and Finnish officers who had served in the Russian Imperial army was concluded in favor of the Jägers: Most of the commanders of army corps, divisions and regiments in the Winter War were Jägers. The Jäger March composed by Jean Sibelius to the words written by the Jäger Heikki Nurmio, was the honorary march of many army detachments. March of the Finnish Cavalry in the Thirty Years' War
(MP3, 401 kB)
"The snowy North is our Fatherland, There our hearths glow by the stormy strand, There our arms grew strong grasping the sword, There our breasts glowed for our Faith and Honour." One of the Finnish cavalry's battle marches, the "Hakkapeliittain Marssi", became popular with military bands and is one of the oldest currently played. It was given lyrics (in Swedish) in 1872 by Zacharias Topelius and is commonly known as the "March of the Finnish Cavalry during the Thirty Years War". "Eessä seisten, eellä mennen..." recorded and performed by the Guards Band and Kaaderilaulajat (male choir).
